DOCUMENTARY // HAPPY

Have you seen "Happy" yet? I originally heard of it from Bridget's Own Diary and it sparked my interest.  It's a look at what makes us all happy, and what doesn't. The documentary dives into slums, rural villages and urban empires around the world. I found it incredibly inspiring, humbling and warm.

For the record, I am not a movie crier. Never have I shed a tear because of a song (except for KKG pref night...all years and rounds). This documentary tore my heart apart in a very happy way.

At one point, there is a group of about eight older women in Japan. One woman lost her entire family, but she leans over to another and says that she is "cute and takes me to karaoke." They all laugh. All of a sudden, I thought of the girls that surround me right now, the ones that I am determined to keep in my life for many years to come.

Another scene finds a family of Louisiana siblings sitting down to a meal at a picnic table together. They reminisce about their childhood days swimming and laughing. It made me so very thankful for the simplicity of my relationship between my sister and I (although are table will be significantly smaller than theirs).

All in all, I took away plenty from the film. Be thankful for what you've got (and acknowledge it). People first. Compassion brings joy. All things I knew from experience, but simplified in a compelling and engaging way. I was sad to see the end of "happy."

So, have you seen it? What did you think? I'll admit, you had to drink the kool-aid a bit. Once I pushed my skepticism aside, I was all ears and tears.
