MEYERS BRIGGS TEST // DO YOU BUY IT?

I was twiddling my thumbs this afternoon and decided to take a Meyers Briggs personality test, thanks to the influence of A Cup of Jo. Turns out, I am an ISTJ (Introvert Sensing Thinking Judging). I've always known myself as an introvert. I "take it all in" rather than rely on my intuition, and I definitely think before I act. However, I found it incredibly hard to answer a majority of the questions on the test (read on). Overall, it pinpointed my personality nicely, but there's a catch. For example...

"Due to their natural strengths ISTJs often find themselves in occupations that involve effective control of production process, good understanding of details, clear-cut planning, require responsibility and being an efficient worker."

All of those qualities are utilized in PR, and it's what makes me good at what I do. I'm not the most creative thinker, although I have a streak of creativity in me. What I do well is efficiently bring results, by executing and planning a long-term cohesive PR process.

"ISTJs are often called inspectors. They have a keen sense of right and wrong, especially in their area of interest and/or responsibility. They are noted for devotion to duty. Punctuality is a watchword of the ISTJ."

I am never, ever, late. But rather than attribute that to my personality, I pin it on my parents. My mom was always late, which meant that I was always late (before my driving days). I never quite got over that! Right and wrong also tend to be relatively black and white in my book, and it's usually clear to me which is which.

"ISTJs are easily frustrated by the inconsistencies of others, especially when the second parties don't keep their commitments. But they usually keep their feelings to themselves unless they are asked. And when asked, they don't mince words. Truth wins out over tact."

Oh my goodness, yes. It drives me crazy when people can't commit. Just as this description says, I tend to share my feelings only when asked (or with very close friends).

But there is a catch to all of this seemingly spot-on personality test. What if I change? Many of the questions on the test were hard for me to answer. I wanted a "sometimes" button. The truth is that I'm still figuring out all of my weird quirks, and that might make me answer differently on different days or with different moods.

So, do you buy these personality tests? Have you taken one? What were you? Did it describe you well?

  1. I did these tests recently and I was suprised at how relevant to me mine turned out to be... although I can't help but think I was looking for it to be right, if that makes sense. Like you, I wanted the 'sometimes' button too! x

  3. Definitely couldn't have graduated with from the COB without taking every personality test known to man ... last time I took it, I was an INTJ!
